Inmates Have No Troubles with Getting a Fix: Incoming Prisoner Mail Laced with Drugs

Mail laced with drugs is a pervasive issue in prisons and jails across Alabama. The introduction of drugs through the postal system poses a significant challenge to the security and well-being of inmates. This problem necessitates a comprehensive approach to prevent the smuggling of drugs through mail. Efforts must be made to enhance screening procedures, increase staff training, and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to address this ongoing concern.
Inmates at Mobile Metro Jail have been receiving seemingly innocent mail that is actually laced with illegal drugs. The senders are going to great lengths to smuggle the drugs in, saturating the paper before stuffing it in the envelope. Sheriff Paul Burch acknowledges that while most of the contaminated mail is intercepted, occasionally some slips through, posing a dangerous and potentially deadly threat.
