A scorching heatwave continues to grip Alabama and the broader Gulf South, marking the most intense week of high temperatures thus far this year. A robust upper ridge prevails, setting the stage for predominantly sunny and blisteringly hot days, followed by clear and pleasant nights as the weekend unfolds. Highs will soar within the 96-100 degree range across the northern half of the state, while communities in Southwest Alabama are expected to endure even more searing conditions, with temperatures reaching an unwavering 100-105 degrees. The heat indices are set to escalate well beyond 100, and as a consequence, all 67 counties are currently placed under either a heat advisory or an excessive heat warning.

The descending air linked to the upper high effectively halts any prospects of rainfall until Saturday. However, a subtle shift occurs as we progress into Sunday, with a modest likelihood of isolated showers or thunderstorms materializing in the afternoon as the heat ridge starts to weaken its grasp.

Anticipating a Cooler Spell and Shifting Patterns Next Week

As we transition to the following week, there’s a notable break in the unrelenting heatwave as the upper ridge gradually dissipates and shifts westward. Monday anticipates highs in the lower 90s, which is a welcome contrast. This trend continues with temperatures leveling off in the mid to upper 80s for the remainder of the week. While the prospect of a shower or storm lingers on Monday, the likelihood of rain increases on Tuesday as a surface front meanders into the state. Model indicators suggest a potential influx of drier air in the latter part of the week, particularly over the northern portion of Alabama. This shift promises lower humidity levels and comparatively cooler nights.

Football Weather Outlook: Warm and Humid Nights

With the inception of high school football’s first week, Friday night sees Alabama enveloped in warm and humid conditions. Under a clear sky, temperatures will gradually descend through the 80s as the various games progress.
