Recommending Medical Cannabis: How will Alabama Physicians get Certified?

This week, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) granted business licenses to companies in several categories, allowing them to cultivate and produce cannabis products for sale at dispensaries in the state. However, in order for patients to purchase medical marijuana, they must have a qualifying medical condition and be recommended by a certified doctor.
The Alabama State Medical Examiners Board is responsible for certifying physicians, who must meet certain requirements, pay a $300 application fee, and complete a four-hour training course. The Board will begin accepting applications for physician certification in mid-July, after the AMCC officially issues business licenses on July 10th.
Physicians must be familiar with regulations for recommending medical cannabis, and it should not be a first line of treatment. They will need to consult with their patients about their medical history and prior treatment before making any recommendations.
